Des Moines airport starts $3 million renovation

The airport's gates will be reorganized so that all seven airlines will be allowed to use the 12 gates. Gates are currently airline-specific, which officials said limits scheduling flexibility.

The renovation will take place one gate at a time and isn't expected to affect travel.

"It might look a little bad for a while but as far as any flights being affected — any timing — it shouldn't affect that at all," said Brian Belt, the airport's project coordinator.

The new look will be quite different, Belt said.

Instead of carpeted walls, an old metal ceiling and worn-down flooring, travelers will see blue, green and wood laminate walls, a new suspended grid system ceiling and new carpeting.

A sprinkler system, which doesn't exist in the two terminals, will be put in place to bring the newly reconstructed areas up to code.
